Seasonal Maintenance
Snowbird Appliance Checklist
Heading back to your Sarasota home after a long stretch away? Before you plug in the fridge or start loading groceries, walk through these checks to catch minor issues before they become major repair bills.
Refrigerator after months of being unused
Empty it completely, wipe down the interior, and check for signs of mildew, leaks, or a warm compressor before restocking food.
Freezer / ice maker
Test the freezer temperature, make sure the door seal is intact, and confirm the ice maker is not leaking or stuck after sitting idle.
Dishwasher
Inspect the filter, spray arms, and drain for debris, food buildup, or a lingering odor before running a full cycle.
Washing machine
Check for standing water, damaged hoses, musty smells, and signs of mold in the drum or dispensers before the first wash.
Dryer
Clean the lint screen, inspect the vent line, and confirm the dryer heats normally before using it again.
Garbage disposal
Look for jams, odd noises, leaks under the sink, and confirm the reset switch and drain are working properly.
Water leaks / odors
Check under appliances, behind them, and around water lines for pooling water, staining, or musty smells that signal hidden damage.
Door seals
Inspect refrigerator, freezer, and dishwasher gaskets for cracks, mildew, or gaps that allow warm air and moisture inside.
Filters
Replace or clean refrigerator water filters, dishwasher filters, and any appliance intake filters before returning to regular use.
Mold / mildew concerns
If the unit was closed up for months, clean the seals, drip trays, and interior surfaces to prevent lingering odors and contamination.
What to test before loading groceries
Verify the unit reaches the correct temperature, runs without tripping a breaker, and has no leaks or unusual compressor noises.
When to call a technician
If there is no cooling, repeated breaker trips, water leaks, burnt smells, or signs of compressor or motor failure, stop and schedule service.
What to test before loading groceries
- Let the refrigerator cool for a few hours before restocking it with food and drinks.
- Check for water leaks under the unit, behind it, or around the door seals and water line.
- Inspect filters, drain lines, and lint screens for mold, odor, or trapped debris.
- Run a short cycle on the dishwasher, washer, and dryer before using them for full loads.
- Look for signs of musty odors, mildew, or deterioration in gaskets, tubs, and rubber seals.
- Verify the freezer is freezing evenly and the ice maker is not leaking, jammed, or producing off smells.
When to call a technician
- If the refrigerator does not cool properly, trips the breaker, or smells burnt.
- If the dishwasher leaks, will not drain, or leaves dishes dirty after a full cycle.
- If the washer will not fill, drain, spin, or shows persistent odors or mold growth.
- If the dryer is not heating, takes too long to dry a load, or the vent is blocked.
- If the garbage disposal hums, jams, or shows signs of electrical issues.
- If you notice standing water, recurring odors, or a failed door seal affecting performance or safety.
